There are several symptoms that can be associated with monkeypox, but not everyone will experience all of them. Most people, however, will develop a rash. Some people will develop a rash before other symptoms, and some will develop other symptoms before the rash. Some people might only develop a rash.
The symptoms of monkeypox can include:
- Rash
- Often located on or near the genitals or anus, but could also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Backache
- Fever
- Chills
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Exhaustion
Uncommon, but potential symptoms may include:
- Cough
- Nasal congestion
- Sore throat
Monkeypox symptoms usually start within 3 weeks of exposure to the virus. If someone has flu-like symptoms, they will usually develop a rash 1-4 days later. The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks.
